The annual State of Logistics™ survey, a Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) initiative published in collaboration with IMPERIAL Logistics and Stellenbosch University is South Africa’s authoritative study on logistics. The survey plays a critical role in the southern African logistics and supply chain management industry. It is increasingly important to monitor South Africa’s performance and put learnings into practice and the survey provides an excellent reference for various stakeholders, including government, analysts, industry captains and supply chain professionals as a source of information and support in the strategic decision-making process. The annual State of Logistics Survey™ was introduced in 2004 and aims to provide a comprehensive picture of the state of logistics in South Africa, incorporating a micro and macro-economic view, an industry-level and market segment development perspective. It has become an authoritative study in logistics since 2004 and in January 2008, the CSIR joined forces with IMPERIAL Logistics. This has enabled researchers to interact with and test hypotheses in a practical environment, investigating and covering all areas of logistics, including ocean freight, transportation, warehousing and inventory management. The 6th State of Logistics™ survey highlighted the importance of balancing aspects such as cost and sustainability, as we strive towards creating a more competitive South African economy. The survey covers the 2008 reporting year and is released during a period where the world is recovering from the recession. South Africa lags behind the rest of the world and the logistics sector has certainly experienced the effect of the recession. Nevertheless this survey again stresses the importance of supply chains and includes trends in supply chains, the cost of logistics and land freight transport volumes and costs, the cost of bad roads to the economy, converting logistics value into a competitive advantage, humanitarian logistics and green logistics and sustainability. Global pressures remain to reduce logistics costs, while increasing emphasis is being placed on providing quality service and adding value. Furthermore, in line with global trends, the drive towards a more sustainable logistics system is gaining prominence. This year’s edition, themed ‘logistics value and costs – driving macro and micro-economic change towards global competitiveness and sustainability’, emphasises the critical economic value that should be derived from logistics. The survey again highlights that the real mitigation of risk and realising sustainable logistics solutions can only, however, be generated through effective collaboration between private and public sectors, process improvements and structural changes.
