Bambanani Fruits BEE (Pty) Ltd

The company, BAMBANANI FRUITS BEE (Pty) Ltd, is the owner of a 100 hectare stonefruit farm and located 60 kilometres west of Johannesburg.(Gauteng)

This farm is widely regarded as the most sophisticated stone fruit farm in South Africa and was previously known as Tavlands of the JCI mining house. The farming unit, as it currently stands, comprises of the farm Modderfontein (493.17 ha) 345 IQ – extend portion 4.

The Vision

The vision of the two directors of the company was to sell shares to loyal workers who have been working with them on the farm since 1994, which is when the first fruit trees were planted.

This vision turned into reality in February 2006 when 25% of the shares were sold to 55 loyal workers. The income of this transaction was used to expand the farming operation.

We also have the vision to expand our business behind our borders into other countries on the African continent. Our intention is to export fresh and other produce to these countries and import fresh produce into South Africa.

Our Business

The company is the national supplier of stone fruit, citrus as well as pre-pact grapes to Pick’n Pay and is also the sole importer of all fruit to Pick ‘n Pay.

The farm can only supply about 20% of the needs of Pick ‘n Pay but we have farmers that supply us with bulk fruit which is been pre-packed in our pack house as for the daily orders by Pick’nPay.

As for the last four years we supply Equality Food (mining hostels) with fresh fruit on a daily basis. This is an extensive operation and we is in the process of expanding in this direction.

    The business is divided into six core groups.
  • Local Marketing (Stonefruit/kiwi/citrus/berries/pomefruit/vegetables),
  • Export (stonefruit),
  • Imports (stonefruit/kiwi/citrus/grapes)
  • Supply fruit to hostels (apples/citrus/bananas)
  • Packhouse ( acting as a staging depot for various producers)
  • Logistics (transportation of bulk and pre packed goods)

Bambanani recently have been awarded the opportunity to deliver a fair share of the no-name brand vegetables into Pick and Pay and is still investigating the opportunity as to become mentors in this regard.
