Background

The National Department of Transport (DoT or NDoT) joined MCLI as our ninth Foundation Member in 2006. They DoT released the National Freight Logistics Strategy in 2005, which aims to address the challenges of the freight transport & logistics sector in the country.

 

Vision

To provide safe, reliable, effective, efficient and fully integrated transport operations and infrastructure which will best meet the needs of freight and passenger customers at improving levels of service and cost in a fashion which supports government strategies for economic and social development whilst being environmentally and economically sustainable.

Mission

To work in a transparent, accountable and responsible manner with the provinces and the other countries in the Southern African Region, to provide an affordable, safe and sustainable national and international system by:

  • Planning new transport infrastructure and means of developing the country to improve mobility and the quality of life for all
  • Regulating the transport system to ensure its efficiency, effectiveness, to prevent strife and create an environment of healthy competition
  • Supporting the transport system through appropriate and justified subsidization where necessary
  • Managing the transport system to ensure its upkeep and so that forward planning for rehabilitation improvements and enhancements can timeously be made

Executive Structure (as at May 2007)

The Minister of Transport is Mr. Jeffrey Thamsanqa Radebe. There is no Deputy Minister of Transport. The Minister is supported by a Ministerial Secretariat headed by Mr. Mpolokeng Makhari, a Parliamentary Officer, Mr. Sakhumzi Zamxaka and a Director for Communications and Media, Mr. Collen Msibi. The Director-General is Ms. Mpumi Mpofo.

The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Transport provides public oversight over the management of the DoT's affairs. Various political parties are represented on the Committee, ensuring that members of the public may make submissions on matters concerning national transport affairs.
