TRAC Overview

  • Trans African Concessions (TRAC) is the concessionaire responsible for the financing, design, construction, rehabilitation, operation, maintenance and future expansion of the N4 Toll Route.
  • TRAC signed a concession contract with the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) and its Mozambican counterpart, ANE, in 1997.  The contract ends in 2027 and is valued at R4,9-billion (2004).
  • TRAC employs 300 people in South Africa and 100 people in Mozambique, predominantly from the communities through which the N4 Toll Route passes.
  • TRAC remains committed to supporting the communities in which it operates, in an effort to improve and uplift the lives of those living along the route.  TRAC’s community activities are centred on education, environment, sport development and road safety.
  • In addition, TRAC plays a key role in job and enterprise creation in the Maputo Corridor, by subcontracting to 39 small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) from the region to the value of R2-million every month.

Overview of the N4 Toll Route

The N4 Toll Route is the central road transport network for the Maputo Corridor and covers a distance of 630km.  The route starts east of Pretoria, passing through Nelspruit in Mpumalanga and ends at the Port of Maputo in Mozambique.

There are four mainline toll plazas in South Africa and two mainline plazas in Mozambique, they are:

  • Diamond Hill – this plaza is situated near Bronkhorstpruit and has eight associated ramp plazas;
  • Middelburg – this plaza is situated between Witbank and Middelburg;
  • Machado – this plaza is based east of Machadodorp;
  • Nkomazi – this plaza is situated east of Nelspruit near Malelane;
  • Moamba – this plaza is based near the town of Moamba in Mozambique, which is 40km from the border post; and
  • Maputo – this plaza is based in downtown Maputo.

Safety on the N4 Toll Route

The safety, not only of the communities along the N4 Toll Route, but that of the motorists remains a priority for TRAC.

TRAC has implemented the following activities in an effort to provide a safe route to all motorists:

  • high accident areas are identified and corrective measures are implemented;
  • round-the-clock patrols are provided by TRAC to assist motorists in their time of need;
  • SOS telephones are provided every 4km, should motorists require assistance;
  • As part of TRAC’s incident management system, it is integrated with centralised call centres that are responsible for the dispatch of relevant assistance such as SAPS, Emergency Services and TRAC patrols; and
  • Safety programmes are carried out with the relevant traffic police.

Overloading

Overloaded vehicles do not only damage the road surface but pose as a danger to other, law-abiding road users.  In an effort to address overloading on the N4 Toll route, TRAC together with the South African National Roads Agency have established five permanent and 11 temporary load control centres in South Africa.  In Mozambique, TRAC has established two permanent load control centres.  Since the introduction of these load control centres, overloading has reduced substantially.
