SA Global Competitiveness Hub Conference:

Expanding Regionally Beyond South Africa's Borders

Dear MCLI Reader

The Southern Africa Global Competitiveness Hub, in partnership with USAID and the US Commercial Service, hosted a conference in Sandton on September the 6th which looked at the challenges and opportunities for business and development in Southern Africa, with the keynote address on this topic delivered by Eric Long of SAB Miller, a company with vast experience of business expansion into Africa.

The conference also dealt with the concept, impact and role of transport corridors in the Southern African region, and how these transport corridors can create competitive access to markets. Panellists were drawn from MCLI and the Walvis Bay Corridor Group.  The session on customs dealt with issues affecting transport such as 24 hour and one stop border posts. And new initiatives being implemented to make customs processing faster and more efficient.  This particular item looked at the SAD 500 (Single Administrative Document) the automation of forms, the integrated border management system and the results of the World Customs Organisation Time Release Studies.

Other items covered included a case study of UTi’s successes and challenges in expanding their services into the region, logistics considerations from clearing and forwarding to bond guarantees, the DTI’s South African strategy for Southern Africa and potential linkages with American business, and major issues on sea and airports operations and logistics into and out of the region.

MCLI would like to congratulate the SA Global Competitiveness Hub and its partners for an excellent opportunity to consider the issues of business expansion into the greater SADC region and for providing a key opportunity for participants to network with stakeholders and potential business partners.
