MFLF Modal Working Group Overview

The MFLF Modal Working Group is the primary means through which stakeholders participate in the Mpumalanga Freight Logistics Forum. This Modal Working Group initially grew out of the pre-MFLF, MCLI Focus Working Groups. The MFLF Modal Working Group focusses its attention on promoting sufficient logistics infrastructure, services and operational efficiencies on the strategic corridors to support a cost effective, reliable freight logistics option of choice for the region’s exporters and importers, with realistic returns for infrastructure investors.

Aims & Objectives

The primary objectives of the MFLF Modal Working Group are to:

  • Create and maintain a platform for highlighting operational inefficiencies and current bottlenecks / high level constraints.
  • Identify other key role players to be part of the work groups.
  • Interact with like-minded stakeholders, organizations and institutions to align activities in pursuit of a common objective.
  • Identify freight logistics bottlenecks, infrastructure shortfalls and mismatches.
  • Address the High Level Constraints identified by the Management Structure in their meeting on the 9th of October 2006.
  • Engage role players to seek practical solutions on identified freight logistics bottlenecks, infrastructure shortfalls and mismatches
  • Build a strategy to address the identified bottlenecks/high level constraints.
  • Build a strategy to promote the strategic benefits of the various corridors.
  • Request the MEC for Roads and Transport in Mpumalanga, along with other relevant high level stakeholders, to engage with relevant private and public sector and political players of the relevant governments and/or administrations to present the group’s strategy for constraint resolution and promotion of the strategic corridors in the province and in neighbouring countries.
  • Develop an integrated information system and the use and updating of the Mpumalanga Freight Data Bank and a Provincial Freight Information System
  • Development of provincial freight scenarios for 2014
  • Present the needs for infrastructure to government

Operation

The MFLF Modal Working Group meets once per month until such time that the group experiences sufficient momentum to meet bi-monthly. It also particpates in political and stakeholder processes, business case and case study development, pilot projects and final project implementation.

The MFLF Secretariat is committed to ensuring that the Modal Working Group operates in an environment of transparency and inclusivity through effective communication.

If you are a stakeholder in the Mpumalanga Freight Logistics Forum and are not already participating in the Forum, we invite you to participate. Your participation is crucial to the successful implementation of the National Freight Logistics Strategy in the province.
